In the 21st century, the majority of organisations now realise that perpetual organisational change has to be a way of life, to remain competitive in the face of regional, national and global competition.
Organisations identify the change initiatives that they need to make, to move their business forward, and implement these, only to find that in many instances they fail to realise the full benefits of that particular change, despite these being clearly visible in other organisations.
This leaves a situation where either a compromised change is accepted, or more time and money is 'thrown' at the change programme to get it to work, or it is abandoned - "Great idea, but won't work here."

There are two strands to any change programme:
- Firstly, there is the 'hard' side, which covers such things as the project management, and providing employees with the practical, physical skills required to be able to work in the new ways.
- Secondly, there is the 'soft' side. This deals with the psychological elements of change, such as uncertainty, distrust and required interpersonal behaviours.
