Your Organisational Climate & CultureMost change programmes have a destination, few have an embarkation point!
If we consider organisational change as a journey, most organisations know where they want to get to, but few consider where they might be starting-out from.
Using analogy, let's imagine that we are going to drive to a holiday destination, but that we don't know where we are to start with. We've got a map, and we can clearly see our destination, but we haven't got a clue as to where we are. How might we overcome this? Well, we could ask someone, if there was someone to ask, but there isn't, as it's 3a.m. So we start driving, initially on 'B' roads, looking for signs as to where we are, but the signs point to villages that mean nothing. Then we drive into a village. The names of the roads (and the shops) are visible, but his still doesn't help. Then we notice a sign for an 'A' road. This looks promising. We drive to the 'A' road, and are faced with a choice of two directions. We decide to turn right, onto the 'A' road, as this looks the most promising direction. At the first roundabout, we see a sign for a major town - Eureka! We find the town in the index of the map, and suddenly we know where we are. We can now plan, and start our 'proper' journey.
Did this ring any bells with you? Imagine how much wasted time and fuel that we would have wasted trying to find out where we are?
This is exactly what some organisations do when they start-out on a change programme. They unwittingly waste time and money orientating themselves, because they don't fully appreciate where they are now with the 'soft' side of change. They don't understand the psychological starting point of their employees and create a more onerous 'journey' for themselves, sometimes baffled by the barriers to successful implementation that they encounter.
